My first job was working as a cashier at a local grocery store. I had no idea that my supervisor was a serial killer.
As an 18-year-old on her first job, I was happily oblivious to company politics, much less the personal drama in Blanche Taylor Moore’s life.
She was well-liked by customers and her public persona was that of a “good Christian woman.” But I remember several of the bag boys saying that they felt uncomfortable around her. She was just a little too—affectionate.
Blanche often brought in food to work to share with co-workers. …
The first time I saw Christopher Reeve on the big screen, he was Superman and I fell in love with the character.
I thought it would be fun to highlight some of the best quotes from the Superman franchise.
“People are afraid of what they don’t understand.”—Man of Steel
The thing that appeals to me most about Superman is that he’s an outsider. Sure, his powers are cool, but I identify with him on a soul level. I always felt like a bit of an outsider myself.
I’m an only child who was a geek way before it was cool…
Are you an artist trying to self-promote on social media?
How’s that working for you?
For the last 2 years, I have posted daily on LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. I have cultivated and grown my social media accounts. I get a fair amount of engagement and have met some cool people.
But has it led to sales of my artwork?
No. Not at all.
I’m burned out, so I sat down yesterday and took an honest look at my social media use and the benefits. …
I’ve thought a lot about kindness lately.
The past four months have been the darkest of my life.
You see, my mother is dying by inches, and I have no community, family, or friends to be with me during this journey. It’s a lonely place.
I’ve coped by trying to pay it forward and inspire others. I guess I’m trying to inspire myself too. Sometimes I feel like a fraud, but I keep trying.
Change starts one step at a time. We begin our journey with one small kindness. May we be the change we wish to see. …
I love geeky shows and movies, and I love that women are starting to get bigger parts. What I don’t love—is the harassment that the actors receive.
Social media has made it easy to spew hate at will, and boy is there a lot of entitlement and hatred out there.
Toxic fandom has always been a thing, but when Daisy Ridley was cast as Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it reached a whole new level. So much so that Ridley deleted her Instagram account in 2016 due to harassment from the “fans”. …
This morning I made a different choice.
I normally wake up, grab my coffee, and hop on the computer. I immediately get to work, neglecting to eat breakfast or give myself any quiet time.
But this morning, I did some yoga, meditated, and had breakfast before I landed here to write.
Why am I telling you this, and why should you care?
Because this is the path to a peaceful life.
Being productive is easy. Anybody can do it. Taking care of yourself is hard. But guess what? If you don’t take care of yourself, nobody else will.
Are you…
I’ve been on Medium since September 2020. My last distributed story was in November. That’s four months with no curated stories.
I tried many times to make the magic happen again. I spent hours pouring over a story — researching, including links, etc. The result? Nada.
Not only did the story not get distributed, but it also didn’t get many reads. The effort was a huge waste of time.
You know what? I don’t care about distribution anymore, and I’m done stressing about it. Now I have the freedom to write what I want.
Do you know which stories perform…
A week ago I wrote about restarting my meditation practice. I managed 8 straight days and then lost my initiative.
Ugh. Why is self-care so hard for me?
It’s not just meditation. I have a difficult time eating regularly, sleeping, and exercising. Heck, I can’t even allow myself time to sit down and finish a book. I can barely enjoy watching a TV show without popping up to multi-task.
As a result, I stay hungry, tired, and moody all the time. No wonder I struggle with anxiety and depression. I’m stuck in a trap.
I suppose deep down I don’t…
So, your latest story isn’t getting many views?
It’s easy to think that if you haven't received many views in the first few days after publishing that you won’t, but that’s not necessarily true.
There are a few reasons you shouldn’t delete that story.
Some stories need room to breathe. I’ve had stories I thought had bombed receive reads months later and pick up steam. The algorithm is funny, and Medium is a big place. Sometimes it takes your followers a while to see your work in their feed. Trust the process.
I don’t believe anything happens by chance. There…
I am shaking with rage as I write this.
I just got off the phone with my mother’s doctor's office. They called to say they are dumping her and that I should move her care to Doctors Making Housecalls, a group of traveling doctors.
They said that they are no longer taking Medicare patients, but my mother is ALREADY a patient there!
But she made the biggest mistake any patient—especially an elderly patient—can make.
She got sick.
My mother got sick 2 days after Thanksgiving last year.
She started having hallucinations, something that she had never in her life experienced…
